Happy New Year, everyone. It’s 2020, and the vegan scene in Hong Kong is expanding so quickly that it’s getting hard to keep up! If you are looking for some new plant-based bites, this is the right place to find out. We have highlighted the best in new menus, openings and more food news in our column. Leaves & Liberty Adds New Veggie Menu, Expands Delivery Range To Quarry Bay

To the delight of Hong Kong’s herbivores and flexitarians, the plant-based sister brand of Hong Kong’s beloved burger chain Beef & Liberty, Leaves & Liberty, have expanded their delivery range all the way to Quarry Bay through Deliveroo Editions! Plus, Leaves & Liberty is upping the offerings on their existing full menu of plant-based burgers, salads, soup, sides and desserts including a new delicious Quinoa Burger.

Leaves & Liberty is available for order via Deliveroo. 

Alvy’s Debuts Vegan Impossible Pizza & Ravioli

This is not a drill. Kennedy Town’s favourite pizzeria and bar Alvy’s has just launched two new vegan-friendly dishes on their menu. That’s right, using Impossible Foods’ brand new plant-based mince and Daiya’s vegan cheese, they’ve created a signature Alvy’s Vegan Pizza and a Resolution Ravioli that make up the perfect comfort meal. Plus, now vegan-friendly neighbourhood hotspot serves up craft beers from Young Master Brewery, all of which do not contain any animal-derived ingredients!

Harmony Brings Vegan Gelato To Hong Kong 

Can you believe that Hong Kong has its own 100% vegan gelato brand? Only a couple of months old, Harmony is handcrafting small batches of delicious and healthy desserts made with only natural plant-based ingredients such as fresh almond milk, coconut juice, coconut water, FairTaste-certified organic raw cane sugar and vegetable fibres. Psst – their 70% dark chocolate gelato is to die for. 

Harmony Dessert’s products are available on their website and at Organic Oasis on Bonham Road.

Trois Cafe Joins Central’s Veg-Friendly Food Scene  

Conveniently located in Central, Trois Cafe is a local independent coffee shop that serves up delicious paninis, sourdough open flats, baked goodies and freshly brewed tea and coffee. While the cafe is technically an omni eatery, it does offer a decent selection of plant-based fare, from roasted vegetable salads drizzled with balsamic vinegar to toasted sourdough bread with a medley of sizzling mushrooms. And they have vegan cookies too – we hear the sesame and walnut flavours are a must try.

Classified Launches New Meatless Menu

Hong Kong’s neighbourhood brunch and café chain Classified has recently unveiled a new plant-based menu featuring some of the brand’s favourite dishes made sans meat. The restaurant team have armed their kitchens with well-known vegan meat alternatives to debut tasty green offerings such as Omnipork Quesadilla, Spaghetti & Gardein Meatballs, Japanese Stir-Fried Heura Chicken Udon, Gardein Fish Burger and Heura Chicken Caesar Salad. 

Classified’s new green offerings are available across all their Hong Kong locations (except New World Tower). 

Central Says Hello To Tempeh Burger 

The latest veggie eatery to hit the Soho neighbourhood is Tempeh Burger. As its name suggests, Tempeh Burger grills up the best selection of tempeh burgers in town. Not only do they offer their burgers in Original and Curry flavour as well as the option to swap out regular buns for a ciabatta, the burger joint is serving salads, udon, pasta and rice, all made with the star ingredient: tempeh!

Cali Mex Unveils Standalone Plant-Based Menu

Everyone’s favourite casual Mexican restaurant and bar chain Cali-Mex has launched a standalone plant-based menu. With a big increase in the number of vegan and vegetarian offerings, the restaurant chain will now have over 20 plant-based items on the menu, from mixed veggie burritos to loaded Impossible Meat quesadillas and black bean fajitas. Sai Ying Pun Welcomes Green Tech Cafe

The newest restaurant to join the plant-based scene in Sai Ying Pun is Green Tech Cafe. The local-run fusion eatery is dishing up the neighbourhood’s hungry herbivores with classic comfort dishes like Beyond Burgers, Portobello & Mushroom Sliders, Tofu Skin Udon and “Chicken” Nuggets! You’ll also find on their menu a selection of vegan lattes and drinks made Oatly, which pairs well with their vegan cheesecakes! Bonus – they’re super affordable with a lunch set (main and drink) starting from HK$ 50!

Green Monday Now Available At All Meraki Group Restaurants

After partnering up with Green Queen to create all-vegan tasting menus for our SDG Dinner Volumes at BEDU and UMA NOTA, Meraki Group will be making their plant-based offerings available at all their restaurants, which also includes modern Malay-fare-serving JALAN. This means that every Monday, all 3 Soho restaurants will showcase off-menu vegan and vegetarian specials, with an option to go all in on a dinner date with a Chef’s plant-based tasting menu!

Wanchai’s Social Enterprise Local Ginger

Yes, Local Ginger has technically been around since 2018, but it’s recently popped up on our radar. Located around the cluster of artsy blue houses in Wanchai, this veggie bistro is a social enterprise promoting healthy meals, vegetarian cooking classes and workshops. Here, you’ll find warm and delicious Hong Kong-style veggie meals, with many of them clearly labelled as vegan-friendly, such as their Braised Mushroom and Burdock Balls with Turmeric Rice and Homemade Wonton Soup!

Treehouse Expands Delivery Range With Deliveroo Editions

Popular plant-based whole food eatery Treehouse has recently expanded their range of delivery through Deliveroo Editions Wanchai, so now you can order your favourite healthy vegan and vegetarian flats, bowls and burgers all the way to Causeway Bay! The restaurant has plans to further extend their range of delivery to cover North Point and Quarry Bay as well in the upcoming months. Read more about it here.
