Aquaman’ and Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa recently launched a sustainable vegan shoe line that is part of the So iLL x On the Roam collection that incorporates upcycled and biodegradable materials in its footwear.
Hawaiian-born actor Jason Momoa joined forces with a climbing brand So iLL Founder, Daniel Chancellor and has unveiled the So iLL x On The Roam Collection, a new limited-edition line of outdoor products including lifestyle approach shoes, climbing shoes, waterproof outdoor bags, and chalk bags with the theme focused on honoring those who roam freely.
Momoa and Chancellor were introduced through a mutual friend in LA and their love for climbing led them to collaborate together for this line. Inspired by his mother, since childhood Momoa has had a craze for the outdoors. On the website, Momoa expresses his love for the world of adventure. “Climbing found me, it blessed me, and I fell in love with it.”
In line with his sustainability initiatives, the line incorporates a host of alternative materials like the shoes are made from organic cotton, algae-based foam, cork, and biodegradable outsoles, for instance, the Yaya Lavender Roamer shoe has a canvas upper material made from 100% organic cotton, a BLOOM Foam insole made from 30% BLOOM Resin which is an alternative to synthetic and petrochemical EVA foams. The top layer is cork along with a rubber outsole mixed with Eco Pure that helps minimize the decomposition time in a landfill as the Bloom technology enables the removal of algal blooms resulting in lower water pollution, creation of sustainable materials and maintenance of healthy ecosystems.
Aside from shoes, the sustainable collection showcases climbing gear such as dirtbags, chalk buckets/bags, and winos developed using recycled plastic water bottles and the dry bag line is made of a rugged TPU material with fully welded seams and reusable face masks constructed from either 100% polyester athletic mesh or with 65% recycled polyester/35% organic cotton developed from recycled PET bottles in an effort to reduce landfill waste.
Announcing the launch on Instagram, Momoa said: “We’re all in this together.”
Momoa and the brand initially worked on pink climbing shoes and now with the new collection, the shoes are available in a range of colours including purple and lavender.
Before he became an actor, Momoa studied marine biology and wildlife biology. He has always raised his voice for important issues such as climate change and addressed the damages we as humans inflict on the planet.
Standing up for sustainability, in a U.N. meeting on Small Island Developing States in 2019, Momoa addressed world leaders: “We are a disease infecting our planet. From the atmosphere to the Abyssal Zone, we are polluted. We are the living consequence of forgotten traditions. We suffer the collective amnesia of a truth that was once understood. The truth that to cause irreversible damage to the earth, is to bring the same onto ourselves. We the island nations and all coastal communities are the front lines of this climate crisis.”
He added: “We can no longer afford the luxury of half-assing it as we willingly force ourselves beyond the threshold of no return. As a human species, we need the earth to survive. And make no mistake, it doesn’t need us.”
The actor ended his address by shouting ‘Ku Kia”i Mauna’ and extended his support for the Hawaiian activists fighting to halt the construction of a huge telescope on the sacred Mauna Kea mountain.
With this latest launch, Momoa joins a fast-growing group of celebrities who are hopping on the vegan bandwagon with cruelty-free and plant-based products.
For instance, Catherine Zeta-Jones has also recently launched a new line of vegan shoes, all developed using vegan leather, memory foam, and water-resistant materials. Selena Gomez too debuted her new brand Rare Beauty, a vegan-friendly makeup line that plans to donate a portion of its profits to mental health organizations. In August of last year, Alicia Keys announced that she will introduce her own vegan beauty collection that is scheduled to launch early this year.
Aside from shoes and beauty, celebrities are also developing vegan F&B products such as Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power’s new vegan wine brand and Kate Hudson’s new range of plant-based nutrition supplements.
Jason Momoa’s new collection will launch this fall on the On the Roam website and you can pre-order it here.
