GFI Named Top Charity 5th Year In A Row For Leading Sustainable Alt Protein Growth

The Good Food Institute (GFI) has been named a Top Charity by the Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) for the fifth consecutive year. The award evaluates the track record of success, impact and scope of nonprofit organisations, with the GFI specifically recognised for its research, policy advocacy and funding success in supporting the alternative protein industry. 

Again joining a select cohort of nonprofits with Top Charity status, the GFI has been recognised for its work for the fifth year in a row since its founding in 2016. ACE highlighted the “highly effective” interventions that the organisation has made in promoting animal-free products and supporting the entire alternative protein ecosystem in its shift towards a healthier, sustainable and ethical food supply chain. 

GFI has demonstrated a strong track record in producing research, conducting legislative and policy advocacy, and engaging with companies to promote animal product alternatives.

“We think that interventions used by GFI are highly effective in increasing the availability of animal-free products, especially conducting policy and legislative advocacy, and engaging large food companies to increase plant-based options,” wrote ACE in their review of GFI. 

“We also think their work promoting research on alternatives to animal products, stimulating an academic field, and building a community of different actors working in the industry are highly effective. Additionally, GFI has demonstrated a strong track record in producing research, conducting legislative and policy advocacy, and engaging with companies to promote animal product alternatives.”

Other charities that were spotlighted by ACE in this year’s list include The Albert Schweitzer Foundation, The Humane League, and Wild Animal Initiative. These organisations will benefit from ACE’s Recommended Charity Fund to continue supporting their efforts to eliminate animal suffering.

Their recommendations are based on months of research involving a rigorous review process to examine organisations’ impact of programs, cost-effectiveness, success in achieving its goals and addressing challenges, leadership and having a healthy and sustainable culture and work structure.

ACE also provides feedback for nonprofits to continue expanding their reach, scope and impact, and advised the GFI continue its work to “progress in research, development, and legal conditions” relating to the cell-based meat sector, which has recently reached the milestone of obtaining the world’s first regulatory approval for commercial sale of Eat Just’s cultivated chicken in Singapore. 

Other feedback ACE put forward include the creation of a “board that oversees the organisation from a more independent perspective” and the inclusion of more information about GFI’s goals for each of its programs as part of its strategic plan.
