Eating plant-based and doing some travelling? We have you covered. The capital of Laos is often overshadowed by the popular historical Laotian destination of Luang Prabang, but Vientiane does have some worthy and delicious plant-based food to offer. While the city isn’t home to many 100% vegan eateries, there are plenty of restaurants willing to cater to herbivores, and we’ve made it easy for you to find them. Below, Green Queen’s top vegan picks in Vientiane.
Reunion Cafe
Reunion Cafe is a small vegan restaurant in the heart of the capital, with an extensive menu full of plant-based Laotian curries, papaya salad, sandwiches, vegetable skewers, rice noodle stir fries, an abundance of mock meat dishes and fresh smoothies. Oh, and they serve vegan spring rolls and dumplings too. We’ve heard great things about this vegan go-to, so be sure to try them out.
Address: Reunion Cafe, Luangprabang Road, Chanthabouly, Vientiane, Laos. Open daily: 9.00am – 9.00pm.
Khouadin Vegetarian
Khouadin Vegetarian is a plant-based all-you-can-eat style casual eatery offering a buffet lunch of Laotian rice, noodle, soup, steam buns and faux meat dishes. While most of what’s on offer is vegan-friendly, some dishes in their rotation may contain egg or dairy, so it’s best to double check on the day. You can either eat-in or takeaway from this casual diner, and prices are affordable. They also encourage customers to only take as much as they can consume in order to avoid food waste.
Address: Khouadin Vegetarian, Khouadin Market, Vientiane, Laos. Open Monday – Saturday: 9.00am – 3.00pm.
Souliphone Coffee
Souliphone Coffee is a little cafe offering delicious traditional Laotian coffees and a variety of vegan food. You can expect to find vegetable fried rice dishes, noodles and sandwiches on their menu, as well as 100% vegan soy-based alternatives of meatballs, pork, egg and more. Plus, they do loads of plant-based baked goodies that you can take away (in your own container ofc).
Address: Souliphone Coffee, Thaduea Road, Vientiane, Laos. Open Monday – Saturday: 8.00am – 8.00pm.
Coco & Co
One of the local plant-based community’s favourites, Coco & Co is a Western-style vegetarian and vegan-friendly eatery. Think instagram-friendly tofu, quinoa and avocado salad, vegan fudge brownies, fluffy pancakes, ice cream and plant-based lattes. Their menu rotates often, and we’ve heard that they tend to sell out quickly, so make sure to arrive early to grab a bite!
