5 Reasons To Veganuary This January

3 Mins Read

Veganuary is a plant-based phenomenon that started in the UK in 2014 and is now a massive global movement. Here’s the non-profit movement’s mission in their own words: “Veganuary aims to reduce the suffering of animals by inspiring and supporting people across the globe to go vegan for the month of January.” A record number of people have signed up this year and there’s no reason you should not be one of them! Here are Green Queen's 5 Reasons why you should seriously consider adopting Veganuary. Share on X

1. It’s cheaper

Plants cost less people! Meat, fish and poultry is expensive, especially here in Hong Kong. A weekly fruit & veg delivery can be yours for as low as HKD 300. So if for no other reason, adopt Veganuary and seriously save some $$$ after the excess spending of the holidays.

2. It’s cleansing

When you fill your body up with nothing but fruits, veggies and herbs, there’s no doubt you will feel better. Even die-hard carnivores know that meat and dairy cause inflammation and are much harder to digest so it’s hardly a stretch to consider how energized your body will feel that pure plants for a month.

3. It’s good for the planet

The industrial meat complex is a serious problem for Mother Earth. From toxic gases to wasted water to farmland that could be put to better use, being carnivorous in today’s globalist world has some truly negative environmental consequences.

4. It’s easy

Soups, salads, stir-fries and smoothies! Sure you can go crazy on the gourmet front if you want to but being vegan is actually a pretty easy way to eat. For us Hong Kongers who don’t have an oven, being vegan simplifies things. A good blender and a couple of stove top pots can sort out most vegan meals, not to mention that Hong Kong now has so many vegan-friendly restaurants and cafes. Check out the Green Queen Guide’s Vegan Restaurants list to find the ones closest to you.

5. It’s the year of plant protein

Can’t be bothered to cook? Don’t worry- you can still get all your nutrients the vegan way. According to Well + Good, “Gone is the idea that protein has to come from an animal. Pea and hemp proteins are popping up everywhere, in increasingly delicious powders for smoothies, in nutrition bars, in potato chips—and also at trendy restaurants like By Chloe and Momofuku Nishi…’Millennials are growing this market. They want what’s good for them—but also what’s good for the people and the environment, ‘ says Vega’s founder Brendan Brazier. In the smoothie powder aisle alone, he adds, plant protein is growing 2.5 times faster than whey, and will soon outpace it.” WORD.
