Team work makes the dream work right? Team-building activities are becoming more and more popular in many companies. But while colleagues are getting to know each other better, they might as well also be working together for a bigger cause. Green Queen rounds up the best activities that your company can join in on to make a difference for our planet and for Hong Kong society.
Hong Kong Cleanup
The Hong Kong Cleanup have been organising community cleanups and other educational initiatives since 2000. Their mission is to empower volunteers with awareness about Hong Kong’s local plastic waste and the global plastic pollution problem. The organisation coordinates managed cleanups for companies that wish to participate in a fun outdoor team-building day. This activity will not only be active, engaging, and educational, but will also do the environment some good and help support the organisation’s continued efforts to make Hong Kong a greener and better place.
Crossroads Foundation
Crossroads Foundation is a Hong Kong-based not-for-profit organisation working to serve global and local needs. They offer four crossroads services, which include relief and aid distribution, experiential programmes on a range of environmental and social issues, donation and collection services, and social enterprises to support employment. For company events, the Foundation runs both skills-specific activities in offices and unskilled general volunteering opportunities at Crossroads’ Tuen Mun venue. Committed companies can even opt to top their volunteering day off with an experiential programme on issues such as water access and global hunger.
Ark Eden
Another corporate engagement activity that will do Hong Kong’s environment and society some good is Ark Eden. The Lantau-based centre is committed to environmental and permaculture education, and is part of a larger global network of ecological restoration organisations working on sustainable solutions for the planet. Offering team-building educational workshops and nature-based experiences, Ark Eden hopes to foster environmentally-friendly practices and green attitudes amongst Hong Kongers. Companies can select from a range of CSR eco-activities including working on farms, making local products, developing permaculture, supporting zero-waste community initiatives and more.
Food Angel
Local charity Food Angel simultaneously tackles Hong Kong’s food waste problem and hunger. Established in 2011 by the Bo Charity Foundation, Food Angel is a food rescue and assistance program. They rescue surplus food that would otherwise end up as waste from the food industry, and prepares nutritious hot meals to be distributed to underprivileged communities in Hong Kong. There are a number of meaningful programmes for companies to work on with the charity, such as food preparation and delivering at their central kitchens, sharing a meal with communities, and participating in an eco-enzyme workshop.
Feeding Hong Kong
A shocking 3,600 tonnes of food waste ends up in Hong Kong’s landfills every single day, while more than one million in the city struggle to afford nutritious meals. Like Food Angel, Feeding Hong Kong collects food surplus to redistribute to under-resourced populations. Companies wishing to make a difference can participate by collecting food staples, sorting food, becoming a Bread Runner or hosting a food drive.
